Butch O’Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard living, ex-homicide cop, he’s the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He’s got nothing to lose.
His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who’s way out of his league. If he can’t have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers… When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead but found by a miracle, the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him…
“Now the new era in the war begins.”
Lover Revealed is the 4th book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, the story of Butch and Marissa.
Butch and Marissa met in the first installment, and the attraction between them has been obvious since then.
It is the most action-packed story in the series so far, filled with fights, twists and turns, surprises. The solution for Butch’s problem is deliberate.
Lover Revealed also provides insight into the world of the Lessening Society. The Fore-lesser’s motivation was a big surprise to me. Shocking turn.
The romance. The main conflict is that Marissa is a vampire, Butch is a human. Furthermore, both of them think that the other one is not interested in him/her any more. When finally their relationship settles, and their true feelings for each other are revealed, Marissa totally disregards Butch’s determinations, and the very real threat of the vampire race pissed me off.
At first, Marissa was self-centered to me. She never asked Butch about anything. She seemed not to be interested in his past, family, problems, plans, and dreams. She was engaged in her reputation, virginity, the difficulties of her feeding, and only her own happiness, when she demanded Butch not to fight. Furthermore, her behavior in erotic situations is absolutely unbelievable. I didn’t like her, and although she becomes a strong character by the end of the story, she is still not my favorite heroine in the series.
So it is not only a romance, but also the individual development of Butch and Marissa.
Marissa needs to find self-confidence and self-esteem. She also has to find her place outside the aristocracy, to figure out what is important and what isn’t. As the story progresses, she establishes a project to help abused women and children, she is able to stand up for herself and outbrave her brother and Princeps Council, and finally she realizes and accepts her and Butch’s role in relation to the Brotherhood.
Butch is a very complex character. He has many thoughts and desires, many scars on his soul. His relationship with Vishous is very special, and hopefully it will always be. It is just so great to see them together. I love the bond, the understanding between them.
His fate fulfills an ancient prophecy, and finally he is not an outsider any more, as he is turned into a vampire, and inducted into the Brotherhood. I cried all the way through the ceremony.
Secondary characters. I’m really not sure if they are actually secondary characters, as all of them become more and more important, and each has a significant role in the book: Vishous, Rehvenge, Xhex, John, Quinn, Blay, Lash.
All in all. It is a great book of the series, considering the action-line, the friendship of Butch and Vishous, and the turn of Butch, but I’m not fully satisfied with the romance, or the character of Marissa.
