When Payne, twin sister of Vishous, suffers a paralyzing injury, human surgeon Dr. Manuel Manello is called in to treat her as only he can- and he soon gets sucked into her dangerous, secret world. Although he never before believed in things that go bump in the night- like vampires- he finds himself more than willing to be seduced by the powerful female who marks both his body and his soul.
This was more than just being alive.
This was to live.
Lover Unleashed is the only book in the series I read only once before. As I was not engaged by it the first time, I had no urge to read it again. Sadly now, for the second read, I was even more bored.
What I enjoyed the first time, and captivated me again, was following Jane and Vishous’s struggles after their ‘happily ever after’, through their problems, and finally finding some peace, by the help and the unfaltering friendship of Butch.
My heart ached for Qhuinn and Blay; the tension between them, their sadness, and resignation are touching.
In Payne and Manuel’s story there is not enough potential that would be enough for a 500-page-long book. I was bored by Payne’s colorless personality. As she spent almost her whole life “under her mother’s care”, there is no long backstory for her.
Manny is just an average human. Okay, he is a brilliant surgeon, with the body of John Cena, but still. His continuous headache, horse problems, and hard-on are annoying. For me, the constant erection, and “sex as a medicine” don’t equal sizzling chemistry.
I found Jose de la Cruz and Veck DelVecchio’s storyline utterly unnecessary, and it is obviously featured only for the sake of the Fallen Angels spin-off series. Even though I got a tiny bit of information about Veck’s story, which remained in shadow in Envy, I still consider this sideline irrelevant.
I was bored by Xcor, his old-fashioned ways, and old-fashioned buddies. Though, his nobility surprised me.
All in all. The sidelines of Vishous-Butch-Jane, and Qhuinn and Blay are captivating, furthermore important and essential regarding the series, but the other storylines, including the main one, left me uninterested.
Even it is not my favorite, I still love the series. We can’t love all the books, can we?
