Ryan Gracin had a good life until he told his parents he was gay. Since they yanked their support for college he had to find a way to pay for it. Little did he know that joining the Army was going to change his life forever. Especially when he was introduced to a Drill Sergeant who was nicknamed ‘Big Daddy’. Phillip Grabowski had joined the Army to follow in his father’s footsteps; by the time Ryan entered, he had already made a name for himself. He was a soldier’s soldier, but Ryan was making it really hard for him to remember that.
I didn’t think that I would like it this much. I’m jumping up and down, grinning mouth full, and screaming. It’s f*cking AWESOME! Okay, let’s try to write a meaningful review.
The Story (Spoiler Degrees: 1)
The humor of the book caught me immediately. I couldn’t scrape off the grin from my face. And it was a real grin, not just a smile. If someone saw me, I think they would thought I was out of my mind. The basic situation is funny: a Drill Sergeant and a recruit fall in love. It’s expected that it won’t be an easy crush. J Anyway, nothing could prepare me for those quips. Oh my God! What Grabowski did with Ryan… 🙂
I loved the military atmosphere; the way Phillip always took advantage of his rank, the way he teased the younger soldier. I owe a lot of unforgettable moments to the book.
Around the half of the book, the tone becomes more serious, but the humor is there all along. I loved those deeper scenes too, and I can say that I’m very fond of the guys. Not just of Phil and Ryan but the others too. It was good to read about something I just heard about before, but I’ve never thought that friendship of “battle buddies” could be that serious. After a couple of weeks, such a strong bond develops between them that they’d die for each other.
And the epilogue… JESUS! Holy f*cking shit! First I didn’t get it, but then I looked at the name more attentively and… OH GOD! 🙂
As I mentioned above, I love all of the characters. I fell in love with Phillip and Ryan immediately, but I love Patrick, Brendon, Kenneth, Mark, and Sandy too. They’re really special to me, I’ll always think about them with a wide grin.
The book has something to say. It isn’t just about sex, and love, but friendship and family, and of course perseverance. It’s a serious-themed book packed in humor. 🙂 I can only recommend it. SO READ IT IMMEDIATELY!
The cover… um… Arghhh… Ok. So the guy on the cover is undeniably hot. But the concept of the cover… A lot of military references appear, and it’s good because it is an important part of the story. But the cover is simply rough-and-ready. Why did they put marching soldiers into the background? Because it’s a soldier thing? I get the BDU style at the lower part of the cover, but this marching… And if you look closer, you can see that the hot guy just has been pinned there. There you go: a hot guy…
So you may have figured it out that it was not the cover what caught my attention. As I really love this book, I won’t take away points because of it. I’ll Be Your Drill, Soldier became one of my favorites.
