A bonus short story, appears in Big Girls Do It Boxed Set
Such a trivial, meaningless phrase
in the face of what really happened.
This bonus short story is only a couple of pages, following Anna’s way home from Chase, and all of her whirling, fervent thoughts about everything that had happened between them.
She is practically running away: she is panicked by the intensity of her feelings, and flounders between disbelief and longing. She relives the perfection of the night, and is bathing a little in self-pity.
Of course, the morning after a hook-up, no one is attractive. Of course, you wouldn’t be there so he’d have the luxury of relying solely on his memory rather than facts, whereas you got a good look at Mr. One Night Stand while he was sleeping and you know he wasn’t as hot as when you were half-drunk.
Well, I think her picture of him is not entirely real as well: maybe she illuminates Chase too, and feels things that maybe don’t really exist.
The Long Drive Home is really well-written and credible: as she recalls her bad experiences from the past, her sadness, doubts, frustration, disappointment, loneliness, and also her desires, and amazement.
