***Rock Stars Do It is a Big Girls spinoff-sequel series. It is best to read this after Big Girls Do It books 1-5 to avoid major spoilers.***
Falling in love with your best friend’s ex sucks. It isn’t fair to want the one thing you can’t have. But the kind of soul-deep need Chase and Jamie felt for each other wasn’t concerned with whether it was a good idea to be together or not. Should they fight for a relationship that came with a tangled web of broken hearts and complications, or should they just let it go, despite knowing that forgetting each other would prove painful and impossible?
“Why are you here? Why do you always show up at the worst times?”
“I wish I knew.” He felt truth boiling on his lips. “But then… I do know. I keep showing up because we’re meant to be.”
After Chase and Jamie walk away from each other they both try to climb out from the depths of the ruins of their lives, and to build a meaningful relationship with someone else. Jamie with Ian, Chase with Tess. But the emptiness and longing for the real thing remain, and they know that their current relationships are only temporary.
Both Ian and Tess feel that they are only distractions and substitutes for their partners, and the inevitable break-ups happen almost at the same time.
It is great that both Chase and Jamie have the strength to see the pathetic aspects in their lives, and they are able to quit and built something valuable with someone else. Although they fail in the latter, their attempt and struggle to make it work are respectable.
This story ends with SPOILER! Highlight to read! Chase and Jamie running into each other on the street after Tess and Ian broke up with them, and finally cast away all their denial, fear, and doubt, and go with the inevitable.
The final scene is very sweet and romantic, I loved it.
