Title: Be My Boy
in Don’t Read in the Closet Volume Two anthology
Author: Casey K. Cox
Genre: Contemporary / MM Erotica
Devastated by the loss of his Master and long-time partner, Owen’s life slips into a tailspin of loneliness and abuse. When he finally gives in and gives up, an angel pulls him from the filthy ground of a back alley.
Mitchell isn’t in the market for a new boy, but he can’t bear to stand by and watch Owen’s demise from the sidelines. He finds more than a companion in the older man when he takes him under his wing, and makes it his mission to show Owen it’s never too late to teach an old dog some new tricks.
* This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group’s Hot Summer Days event, appears in Don’t Read in the Closet Volume Two, a collection of short stories celebrating love, sex and romance between men. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.
I was hesitating whether to read it or not, as I’m not a fan of BDSM stories in general, and especially not of master/slave stories. But the reviews convinced me to do so, and I’m so glad I read it.
It is such a wonderful story!
The same soft hand that had dried his tears last night caressed his cheek. “Are you real, or did I die in my sleep?”
It started pretty rough, but fortunately got better quickly. Mitchell amazed me with his openness, with his clear communication. He had a perfect way with words: no fluff, no chance of misunderstanding.
“Now hold up right there. I’m a patient kind of guy but I’m not going to spend the next ten years as scaffolding for your delicate ego. So let’s not get into the whole ‘but you’re so young and I’m so old’ thing. You’re sexy. I want to make you whimper and beg and scream my name. End of story.”
Owen had lost his partner a year before, and it was so heartbreaking to see how lost and broken he was: it surely triggered even my protective instincts. He has very special needs and Mitchell is just perfect for him.
Two things bothered me:
One, Mitchell says he has been watching Owen for a couple of months at the club. Months. Spoiler! Highlight to read! Dear God in Heaven, what took him months to stand up for and save Owen? How could he only watch for months and not protect him?
Two, there MUST be a plot gap between the first scene and Owen and Mitchell’s first time together – at least a shower break time… Please.
Beautiful, heart-wrenching, emotional story with great characters.
